November 2014 Focus of the Month

Focus of the Month - November 2014

Prediabetes

  • More than 1 out of 3 adults in our community are projected to have prediabetes.

  • 9 out of 10 people with prediabetes do not know they have it.

  • Prediabetes is when your blood sugar level is higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.

  • If you have prediabetes, losing weight by eating healthy and being more active can cut your risk of getting type 2 diabetes in half.

  • 15-30% of people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years, unless they lose weight by making healthier lifestyle choices.

  • People who have diabetes are at higher risk of serious health complications including: blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, and loss of toes, feet or legs.

  • You can prevent type 2 diabetes with small changes.Start by asking you primary care provider about getting your blood sugar tested.
