Stress and the Immune System

                                       September 2015

Stress and the Immune System

“Stress kills.”  Many of us are familiar with this expression.  But, what does this phrase mean?  There are links between the effects of stress and the following health conditions:  asthma, depression, anxiety, drug use, diabetes, sleep disorders, cancer, cardiovascular disease, stomach issues, just to name a few.   Stress is a part of life.

However, there are many ways to offset the damaging effects of stress before it wreaks havoc in our lives.  Stress does not have to dictate our health.  We can learn to manage our stress levels.

Below are some proven stress management techniques:

  • Exercise (Yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong)--just move

  • Art and/or music therapy

  • Pet therapy

  • < >

    Bodywork therapies (massage, Reiki, acupuncture)

  • Meditation, breath work, progressive relaxation, visualization

  • < >

    Healthy diet
